The mission of the Cherokee Nation is “ga du gi” : Working together as individuals, families, and communities for a quality of life for this and future generations by promoting confidence, the tribal culture and an effective sovereign government.
The Cultural Renewal Program was established in 2002 through the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation’s drug elimination grant. In 2003, the program became a part of the Nation allowing all youth to participate in the learning of Cherokee history, language and building leadership skills.
Purpose of the Cherokee Nation Cultural Renewal Program is to; strengthen community organizations and encourage Cherokee citizenship and participation by exposing Cherokee youth to Cherokee community leadership and show how Cherokees have survived and excelled through group/community actions and developing future leadership skills through the funding of activities for youth that serve this purpose.
The main objective of the Cultural Renewal Program is to:
• Promote self-esteem • Leadership skills • Increased community organization • Cultural and language awareness
Activities: • Monthly meeting • Attend two community meetings • Interview two leaders from either the community or elected office • Research ancestry and land allotment • Community service project • Interview with staff personnel • Attend leadership development workshop
